While cupping therapy may seem like a trendy, new-age type of treatment, it actually dates back to ancient Eqyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine, which involves placing specialized suction cups to increase blood flow in specific areas. The cups are placed onto certain parts of the body for a few minutes at a time and use heat and different degrees while the suctioning is taking place. The cups can be placed on your back, stomach, arm, legs, and other parts of the body. Cupping can help with a wide range of symptoms, including pain, inflammation, lymphatic drainage, easing adhesions, and more. Additionally, cupping acts as a specialized deep-tissue massage that is heat activated.
Cupping treats a wide range of symptoms that cause pain. Patients have also reported that it helps with some chronic health issues. Cupping can help with the following symptoms:
In addition to the symptoms mentioned above, cupping has also helped patients who suffer from skin issues, muscle spasms, cellulite, stubborn fat, sciatica and more.

Cupping increases blood circulation in the area in which the cups are placed. It is done to relieve muscle fiber tension, which improves the overall blood flow to the area and promotes cell repair. It also promotes new connection tissue formation and also creates new localized blood vessels that helps stimulate healing.
During the treatment, one or more of the specialized cups are placed onto the skin using heat or a suction. The cups are heated with a fire source that is placed directly in the cup. Shortly after, the fire source is put out and then the cups are placed onto the skin. Because the cups have hot air in them, the air then cools and creates a suction that lifts the skin and muscle. Your skin will become red, as your blood vessels respond to the change in pressure. However, it is a good sign when your skin changes that color because it indicates that there is an increased blood flow in the targeted areas. The great thing about the change of color on your skin, is that it can indicate a diagnosis for the patient’s underlying condition. After treatment, there may be mild bruising, which usually goes away within 10 days.
